Scion Monthly comes to Tampa

Here’s another event sponsored by a major corporation in an effort to extent their brand, in this case, the Scion line of cars to a target market, us. The event is potentially free, if you RSVP (give them juicy information about yourself) and get there before the venue reaches maximum capacity. They are bringing in RUSKO who I think has done some great things for the music we love and 12 Planet who runs the SMOG outfit in LA, but is this concept taking it too far? Is this the beginning of the end for dubstep? Will corporations and their marketing plans eventually take this music that, in my opinion, has become so popular due to its lack of cookie cutter arrangements (cough: DnB) and its inability to be penned down and cheapen it for their own marketing campaigns. Dubstep has always been a breath of fresh air. What comes after this corporate exploitation? Will we see ridiculous pop stars like Ke$ha, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga having dubstep tunes on their next mind numbing albums? I certainly hope not. Well, until that dreaded day comes, here’s some “potentially” free dubstep action in Tampa:

FUTURE DUB FOUNDER BEN DANNER SPINS UP A STORM AT A MENACE BEACH

DUBSTEP NIGHT FUTURE DUB BRINGS TALLAHASSEE BACK TO THE FUTURE.

bilde

The dubstep I play, I would describe it as, like, drum and bass with electro-house basslines, mixed with gangster rap beats,” said Danner. “The snare’s always on the three, and it’s usually at 140 beats per minute. House is a little more strict, like, a house beat is a little more strict. And how you dance to it, the way people react to it, would be way more similar to the person standing (next) to you. But with dubstep you can dance really slow, and the girl next to you can be dancing really fast. No one in town is doing it, and it’s huge everywhere else. It’s definitely a young genre of music; it came out of the UK in around 2002, I guess. And it’s huge over there. I mean, it’s like hip-hop is in the United States.

If the first Future Dub goes well on Thursday, Danner has plans to increase Tallahassee’s unmet dubstep prescription to once a month, possibly even weekly, until everyone knows exactly what dubstep sounds like and how to dance to a wobbly bass.
