Attention dubstep lovers, if you’re unfamiliar with the elegantly deep and richly eclectic future bass music from Haunted Audio Recordings, here’s a chance to educate yourself. Recently we had a sit down with label owner Emily Lapham to talk about the music, the artists and what’s next after all the success and growing popularity of the label.

How did you get started in this music? What are the labels origins?

The name Haunted Audio harkens back to the the days when Florida veteran DJ Redcoat produced drum and bass tunes; from there it morphed into being a coalition of drum and bass and dubstep djs playing all over Florida. Now Redcoat is behind the scenes helping to select and release music on the Haunted Audio label; as well as dj’ing regularly on his Ustream channel. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/hauntedaudio

Describe the Haunted Audio music catalog and label philosophy.

Bass music with a focus on melody, tight percussion work and deep bass. We believe that deep bass and excellent production work can have the same impact as the more ‘in your face’ stylings of much of the current “noisy” music.

Tell us about some of the artists on the label.

Well, most importantly, each artist has their own distinct sound.

Belgian DJ and producer BunZer0 has a hugely successful radio show – “FOB show” Thursdays on Sub.fm (winning for Best Dubstep show in the dubstep forum awards). In addition, his productions are winning major respect from fans.

Simon/Off is from Graz Austria, currently a hotbed of great soundsystems, music lovers and great music; and his productions have garnered support from Sonic Router and some of the bigger bass music bloggers.

Janner currently lives in Belgium – though he is actually English – and has a very interesting garage/dubstep style that fits nicely within a variety of genres. He’s been make music for over a decade, focusing mainly on drum and bass and breakbeats.

Florida’s very own Dubyah/Will Miles is an accomplished dnb producer.

Toronto native Ill-esha sings, djs, writes and produces music for film and commercial use too – a trule“renaissance” women. Check out her impressive youTube clips where she sings and djs at live shows.

Luthor, Actraiser, Rdubz, Graphics, all hail from various parts of the UK ; and all have their distinctive styles of bass music. Luthor tends more towards the dubtech sound and many of his productions are very trance and techno-oriented. Actraiser has produced everything from downtempo (as Dr. Strafe) to progressive house to garage and his lush beats and melodies are amazing. Graphics is very young – just out of high school – and his next-level, post dubstep falls in the same vein as Joy Orbison, Joe and Hessle. Rdubz tunes are full of melody and drama and as home on the dance floor as they might be in a movie soundtrack.

Iceland’s Hypno has gone on to release his sophisticated productions on labels such as Ramp and PTN.

The Subreachers – Tim and Matthias – are an up-and-coming Belgium duo producing together and separately; and they’ve had tunes on Hospitals’ New Blood series as well as working with London’s Antisocial crew and much much more.

Newest signing is Blind Prophet from NYC.

Then we’ve had remixes by HxdB (veteran Canadian producer who’s appeared on Mary Hobbs show, Electronic Explorations and more. A remix of Blind Prophet “Rotate” is being released later this summer by Policy, who’s an up-and-coming producer from NYC.

Veteran Belgian producer Saviour has remixed some of Janner’s tunes as well as working with closely with BunZer0 and the Stainage crew, and releasing his own heavy tunage.

What’s your favorite accomplishment and why?

Besides creating a little community of “Haunted Audio artists”, I’d say putting on the show here in Orlando with Mala has been my biggest accomplishment to date.

What’s in the works? What does the future hold for Haunted Audio Recordings?

We’d like to do releases on vinyl; and hopefully put on another big show. I would also love to own a soundsystem and do one-off guerilla-style parties with incomparable live sound.

FloridaDubstep.com would like to thank Emily for her time and encourage the entire sunshine state massive to support and share this awesome, Florida-based, future bass record label.

Recently we had the great fortune to get an interview with the exciting live dubstep collaboration from the city of bass, Sounduo. After reading the interview below check out their live act at the bottom of this posts.

Sounduo Interview

Who is Sounduo? Please tell are readers more about yourselves.

Sounduo is a musical collaboration between Miami-based producers and musicians Will Mills and Zach Morillo. It is a blend of bass heavy musical genres, sample-based electronic hip-hop, dubstep and traditional dub stylings. Our performance features Zach playing live drumset and Will controlling Ableton Live with a digital-dub controller rig. Zach has been serious about playing drums since the age of seven. Before and during his time attending the Frost School of Music, Zach has played in played in all kinds of musical scenarios, including big bands, salsa ensembles, fusion, reggae, and rock. His music production career began in high school, where he was first introduced to electronic music production software. Ever since then, Zach has been creating and experimenting with dub, hip hop, and bass music. Will is a seasoned musician and trained engineer, and has been writing and performing professionally in a variety of genres for over 7 years . He was inspired to seriously pursue electronic music after working as an assistant engineer to Thievery Corporation in their ESL Studios in Washington D.C.

When did you form your group? What inspired you to make music together?

Sounduo officially began July ‘10. We’ve been collaborating and producing in various bands since we met attending the jazz program at UM in ‘05. We were listening to and playing a lot of reggae and dub music, as well as producing electronic beats. Once exposed to the heavy bass movement in South Florida including local djs, and international stages like Ultra Music Festival, we were inspired to form an official collaboration.

What’s the best part of performing live? Which show that you’ve played has been your favorite so far?

The best part of performing is having the crowd react and respond to the dynamics we strive to bring to the set. As well as hearing our creations loud and full, on a sound system that supports our music. We perform all original music so it’s rewarding to connect with the audience in the live setting. It’s hard to choose any one show, but WMC ‘11 with DJ Hatcha and Juan Basshead at Vagabond (Miami) was a solid night. Ultra Music Festival ‘11, as well as opening for Big Gigantic and Afrobeta (Miami) were also great shows.

Could you briefly describe the music-making process? What are rehearsals like?

Sounduo is a 2-step process; we produce the tracks first, then transfer them to Ableton Live for a custom live performance setup. The performance is designed to allow us to change the structure of the song on the spot and allows us to improvise on the tracks, mashing up the sequences of the song and the custom glitch/dub effects rig. Controllers and live drums add the final element. Rehearsals are for the purpose of creating an overall arc to the set and the transitional elements, as we are both involved heavily in the production of the tracks therefore have good knowledge of the music going in.

What’s currently in the works? Do you have any upcoming shows or releases we should know about?

We will be hitting the road very soon. Touching the major markets up and down the state of Florida. We also have an exciting development around the time of New Years. We are also currently working on an EP, amd hope to release it by the end of the summer. Search us on Facebook and ‘like’ us to keep up with tour dates, new releases, and news.

Any last words? How about a Florida Dubstep exclusive?

Here’s a quick preview of a song on the EP that’s coming out. The track is called ‘Imagination’. Also be sure to check out our soundcloud page for the music we’ve released already. We’d like to thank everyone, as well as the Florida Dubstep Team who’s supported us so far! Thank you!

About Atroa:

Since the mid 90’s, Atroa has been a very strong stitch in the Electronic Dance Music fabric which has been weaved tightly throughout the years. Starting his DJ career with a mixed matched collection of House & Techno records, it was around 1998 when he truly started to find the right groove with heavy aggressive dance music. Soon after, he discovered various sounds & techniques that set off a whirlwind of music production that took him to the next level which led him to his first major publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. From that point on his studio production was kicked into high gear with vinyl & CD releases dropping into retail stores worldwide

Monday night was a long awaited experience when I drove 200 miles down to Ft. Lauderdale to check out Glitch Mob. But, before I explain the complexity of their set, I have to mention the opening act, Marty Party. This glitchy dubstep half of the group PantyRaid was trying to blow the speakers throwing an awesome blend of original and mixed content. The hurt my chest but soothed my soul, a great surprise for me, since I was not familiar with the artist.

As for The Glitch Mob….WOW. An amazing performance of their new album, Drink the Sea, accented by a killer light show and a loving crowd. The group was also selling double vinyl versions of their album at the show and hung out for quite some time after wards to sign autographs and meet the fans. All three members of the group, eDit, Ooah(also the other half of PantyRaid), and Boreta, are some of the most down to earth artists I’ve ever encountered. I was even able to snag an interview with Boreta.

Me:So, how did you guys get started as a group, because originally you were all individual artists?

Boreta: Yeah, we were all individual artists and DJs and decided to do it as a group one time and it was amazing. We really felt it was a good way to perform and we just continued doing it like that.

Me: What about the name Glitch Mob, how did that come around? Wasn’t it like a joke or something?

Boreta: Honestly, we started playing shows before we had a name. We were just like edIT, Ooah, and Boreta and the promoter booked us for a show and told us we needed a name. So, a friend of ours said “Glitch Mob”, and we were like…”Okay.”

Me: Since you guys play a wide variety of tones and effects, what would you categorize you music as, or would you even care to?

Boreta: A lot of people consider the word “glitch” to be a genre of music and it is, but at the time we thought of it we weren’t tying it to a genre of music. Honestly, it’s more like electronic music, any further we traverse down the ladder of sub-genres doesn’t really apply because we have so many different tempos.

Me: Is it true that you guys are like an electronic Jam Band and that you know your opening song and your ending song and that everything in between is just freestyle?

Boreta: We use to actually play like before we had an album, but now we have a setlist just like a regular band. There’s tons of improvisation, where we will improvise notes, but for the most part we follow the set list. It used to be like a DJ set, where you had a bunch of tracks and you just played what the crowd was feeling.

Me: Awesome. How did you guys come about using the touchscreen controllers and could you elaborate more on what they are for you as opposed to any other type of pad or keyboard?

Boreta: We wanted a way to show the crowd what is it that we’re doing. They’re called Lemurs, like the monkey. A typical DJ is sitting behind decks or a laptop, and you can’t really see what they’re doing. And we did that for years, and we wanted to figure out a way to show the people what was going on create visual effects to go with the rhythms and stuff.

Me: Is that way you setup so they face the crowd?

Boreta: Exactly, just another way to get the crowd involved in the show.

Me: I’m not sure about you and Ooah, but I know that edIT used to compose everything in ProTools, is that what is still being used?

Boreta: Yeah man, we use all kinds of stuff. I know how to use ProTools, I’ve also made a lot of my earlier stuff in Logic. Now, we use Cubase and we’re in Ableton when we are live. We don’t really stick to one thing, it’s more about whatever works at the time.

Me: Who are some of your influences musically?

Boreta: It changes constantly. I like Jack White and the White Stripes, Dead Weather, and I like all kind of electronic stuff, I’m a big Aphex Twin fan.

Me: So what do you think the future holds for Dubstep and Glitch and the Glitch Mob?

Boreta: For a genre of music versus us, it’s kinda different things. People are being really creative and technology is allowing a lot of progression and a lot of new things to happen. It’s going to keep getting more and more interactive and fun and crazy, and more people will embrace it.

Me: Thanks for your time.

Boreta: Cool man, thanks for coming out.
